Stress Related Hair Loss

So many of us are facing very challenging times with isolation, fears for our health and the health of our family and friends along with job losses and general uncertainty for the future.

I am sure you may be thinking that hair loss is the least of my worries right now, but i want to share some information that may help with regards to stress and how this can affect our body with regards to hair loss. I what to share this information because it can be avoided if you are aware before it goes too far!

Obviously this is my job so i have an extensive amount of research done with regards all types of hair loss BUT this particular type of hair loss i can speak about personally because i have experienced it first hand…… And it can be avoided!

Telogen Effluvium

So this is a technical term for stress/anxiety related hair loss. This presents and extreme or excessive hair thinning or shedding in a short space of time. It is not permanent but can last for some time. There is also a form of Alopecia that is related to stress also but i am not talking about that today. IN MY OPINION this particular form of hair loss is directly related to hormonal changes in the body due to stress.

Along with pregnancy, postpartum & menopause, stress and anxiety are major factors with hormonal fluctuations within our body and they create different issues for us all.

I could go into the real technical side of all this and explain how this happens but i really just want to explain how we can prevent it or reduce it or how to correct it. So if anyone wants to know the technical info please email me and i will go into further detail on a personal basis. silkehair8@gmail.com

My personal experience!

So i want to give you a brief rundown of how this effected me so that you can see how easily it could have been avoided. So as you know, i suffered postpartum hair loss after the birth of my second baby and skipping forward about a year and a half i was really happy with the recovery of my hair. It was in great condition, thick (for someone with fine hair naturally) and healthy.

Within the space of a few months a few different things happened that were totally out of my control, but i let them effect me so much. Some of which were other peoples actions that i took so personally I literally was not sleeping! At the time i thought i must have done something terrible for people to be treating me like this! I am “a lover not a fighter” & “a giver not a taker” and i thought i had to take certain actions to correct other peoples actions. UNTIL one morning i got up and brushed my hair and IT CAME OUT IN MY HAND!!!!!!! I was loosing so much i thought i would soon have no more. It took this to happen to me to realize that i was so stressed over issues out of my control. I was devastated…. Currently, i have active growth again and it is coming along slowly but i know i am the right side of it now.

MY POINT IS THIS DID NOT NEED TO HAPPEN TO ME AT THAT TIME!! WE NEED TO BE AWARE THAT CIRCUMSTANCES OUT OF OUR CONTROL DO NOT NEED TO NEGATIVELY IMPACT OUR PHYSICAL BODIES, WE CAN TAKE MEASURES TO PREVENT IT!!!!

My Advise

We are facing very stressful times, but we can take measures to help prevent hair loss. We can be extremely stressed and be totally unaware of it (i speak from experience). Sometimes we have to step back and realize that we can only control ourselves.

PREVENTION – Trying to reduce this stress is key here and keeping a healthy diet and getting regular exercise is very important. Getting our 7-8 hours of sleep at night is also so important. A good home hair-care routine will help here and giving your hair a good at home treatment can be very relaxing and beneficial to our hair.

TREATMENT – If you are experiencing this type of hair loss and it is only recent, then you can take measures to insure it does not get worse. The above prevention tips also apply here. Adjusting your hair care products to help promote stimulation of the scalp will help. Also taking supplements with biotin and essential vitamins to help promote active growth is essential.

EXCESSIVE – If you are dealing with this for a long period of time and have excessive thinning then all the above should part of your daily life. I can give more advise on a bespoke personal level to anyone suffering this over email silkehair8@gmail.com so please get in touch.

I hope that this is helpful to you in these stressful times we are facing. I am always available for advise so please leave a comment, pop me an email or get in touch on facebook or instagram with the links below. Please stay safe.

Be your own kind of beautiful x
